I got a weird sense of excitement the other day when my clock broke. The second hand kept twitching in a spasmodic rhythm that made telling the time impossible. My first thought was “ooh! a task!”.
Then I proceeded to forget about it for a week, as I am known to do quite often.
But sure enough I eventually sat down with my tiny screwdriver to get to the bottom of this little problem, the exciting anticipation building in me as i did so.
I took apart the clock, then pried off the time keeping hands, and unsure of what to do next, i put them back on and…. it worked!
for a few moments… then the second hand got caught on the minute hand and the reason for the malfunction became readily apparent. Aha! i ghasped, before bending the hands so that they fit properly, then putting the clock back together and admiring my hard work while it ticked away on the wall before me.
I fucking love fixing stuff if you couldn’t tell. Especially little things like that clock. Theres something so visceral and pleasant about working away on a tiny little gadget. Even if i cant fix it i still have tons of fun figuring out how to take the thing apart.
Now, I could wax philosophically how its important for us to fix things rather than raplace them, especially in this late stage capitalism time where companies explicitly make things to break rather than be fixed. But we all know that by now. I’m here to espouse on the joys of fixing stuff. I mean the feeling i get when i can look at something in my house and think “yeah i fixed that” is one of great satisfaction.
So the next time something in your house breaks, Fix It!
or try too at least! i definetely fix only some of the stuff that breaks, but its a fun time either way.
plus you can listen to an audio-book or media of your choice while you do it! the benefits are endless!
so go out into the world and tape that ripped book cover, glue that kitchen dongle back together, and bend those clock handles back into place, you wont regret it.
